With the decreasing number of volunteers joining the military over the last 5 years the army has had to lower its standards in order to maintain its recruitment levels. One of the negative effects of this is that the quality of the soldiers joining the military has gone down and fewer emotionally stable individuals are shipping out to Iraq to serve in the army. This in part explains some of the shocking abuses that the public has become aware of during the war such as the Abu Gharib prison abuse scandal. When they return home from war they are more likely to engage in violent activities against family members and others once they are back.
Nearly 120 U.S. soldiers have been involved in killings stateside after returning from combat duty in Iraq. The killings have involved shootings, stabbings, drownings, and driving accidents involving alcohol abuse.
Often times soldiers who are experiencing trouble adjusting to civilian life do not seek any kind of help for their emotional difficulties because in the military there is a culture that considers seeking out such help as a stigma and a sign of weakness.
