Millions in Lottery Winnings Unclaimed Each Year

A recent survey had discovered that a total of 570 million dollars worth of lottery winnings went unclaimed in 2006. Among the abandoned jackpots were dozens of winning tickets worth 1 million dollars or more and hundreds worth at least $100,000. The biggest unclaimed fortune was for almost 52 million dollars which was sold in the state of Indiana. In 2007 a 31 million dollar pot was unclaimed in New York City's Mega Millions Jackpot Game. Lottery officials site forgetfulness as the likeliest reason for this.
