There was a lot of controversy in the years prior to the mission itself with regard to the scientists who were building the rockets and preparing the mission. The rocket builders were dominated by scientists who came from germany. Many of them were captured by the american forces in Germany after the fall of the Nazis in the spring and early summer of 1945. Chief among them was a brilliant German Scientist named Werner Von Braun. He was Hitlers best rocket scientist during the war and he is responsible for coming up with a lot of scientific technological achievments. He came up with the V-2 rocket. This was a rocket that the Germans were launching at the City of london during the last year of world war two. It was basically the worlds first missile. It didnt require a pilot, It had wings and fins for stability in flight and it carried a dangerous payload of explosives for maximum destruction upon impact. There were some in the government who felt that such a person should not be involved in americas mission to land a man on the moon and wanted him removed from the project. These people were over ridden by superiors who felt that Von Braun's abilities as a scientist were so signifigant that it trumped his past with the nazis and he stayed on. It was in fact his rocket design that ended up being the vehicle that made it to the moon.
